Anti-FGM forum concluded in Garowe, Puntland

An anti-female genital mutilations (FGM) forum for Somali speaking women from East African countries has been concluded in Garowe town, Puntland.
The two day forum which brought together women from Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti was organised by Puntland’s Women Development and Family Affairs Ministry in efforts to stop the practice within the community in East Africa.
The forum adopted recommendations in curbing and discouraging the practice including creating alternative jobs for people especially women who conducts female circumcision to eke a living.
Curbing unIslamic female genital mutilation, issuing religious Fatwa on the practice, public awareness campaign targeting both people towns and pastoral communities and inclusion of the impact of FGM into school curriculums, were among the recommendations made by the participants of the meeting.
Participants also proposed tougher regulations on the practice in all countries in the region as well as funding to fight the FGM. Close regional corporations among countries were also recommended in order to fight the practice.
Puntland immediately said it was going to implements the recommendations and called on other countries to follow suit.
