Militia Cleric Declares Somali Fighting Spiritual
Mogadishu: Bar-kulan: The leader of Somalia’s Hizbul-islam militia group, Hassan Dahir Aweys, has declared the ongoing fighting in Somalia to be religious and compulsory for every Muslim.
Aways labeled the war against the government and the African Union peacekeepers by insurgent groups as “Jihad”. Aways is one of the top leaders of the Hizbul-Islma militia and was an influential figure during the Islamic Courts Union era in 2006.
The cleric made the announcement yesterday at a press conference held in Mogadishu. He also urged Somalis and Muslims to support what he described as ‘the holy war’
The leader of Hizbul-Islam also accused Somali Transitional Government officials, and Somalis who support them, of being people who have wronged Islamic religion and their country.
He said that it was wrong to support foreign forces that he described as ‘occupiers of the country’.
The declaration of Sheikh Hassan Aways comes when international Muslim clerics have condemned the fighting in Somalia and announced that it is contrary to Islamic principals.
Bar-kulan.
