Al shabaab Fighters clashed with Kenyan forces
Armed gun men suspected to be Alshabab fighters clashed with Kenyan security officers on patrol along the common border, provoking the security personnel as Kenya bolsters its northern border region, a regional administrator said today.
The incident, the first of its kind, occurred at 2.00PM (local time) along the Har haar area near the main road on the border during which al-shabab gunmen fired at a moving Kenyan security vehicle. The Kenyan security officer responded with gun shots.Un-confirmed reports earlier indicated that al-shabab fighters attacked a Kenyan security base and two casualties were reported.
Speaking to Radio Barkulan, the Northeastern Provincial Commissioner,Mr.James Ole Serian dismissed reports claiming that a Kenyan border base has been attacked by the shabab fighters but confirmed that Kenyan security officer on patrol responded to Shabab fighters along the main road before returning to the base.
“Our security officers, the General Service Unit (GSU) patrolling the border met Alshabab fighters who fired at them; they (GSU) also fired back. Then militias fled to Dhobleey and our forces returned back to their base.” said the regional administrator, adding that there were no casualties reported on the Kenyan side.
The PC said, ‘The incident occurred at around 2pm, there were no casualties on our side. We do not know about the alshabab side. It is an accidental meeting and our border area is still very safe.”
“We have deployed sufficient security personnel including the Army backed by Tanks to reinforce border patrol. Kenya will protect its international boundary without getting protracted in to the fighting in Somalia,” said Ole serian.
